The Only Gold Medals That Matter

I saw this video a couple of days ago and I’m still marveling over it. In the video, an able-bodied middle school wrestler is in a match with another student who has cerebral palsy. Watch this short video to see what happens.

This represents the best of sports, and is what I wanted my kids to learn by participating in sports when they were growing up. I think one of these wrestlers deserves a gold medal for courage and the other one deserves a gold medal for compassion.

I have seen kids though who get angry when they are given the gift of a win...in this case I think it was a good deal...working on everyone being winners.

  2. Winning is good- but the best part is playing the game- and yes, everyone needs to keep their spirits bright every now and then, that's what keeps a person coming back! Thanks for sharing this lovely video!

  4. Loved the video Galen!

Perfect combination of compassion and courage indeed! I wish more kids would become like these kids, which can happen provided these values are instilled in them by their parents, as parents play a major role in developing these feelings in them. :)

    Thanks for sharing. :)

  6. Wow - seen this video before but inspired every time I watch it. I think they featured this on a news story on abc and even the newscaster teared up as he was talking about. Kids can teach us so much about courage and character! In the news story, the kid who was pinned said life isn't always about winning! Profound!
