Grateful Praise

We sang this old hymn in church this morning. The tune is simple and the words are simple, a humble song of gratitude.

For the beauty of the earth
For the glory of the skies
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies
Lord of all, to Thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise

As I sang it, I was so filled with appreciation for my life, for all the blessings that pour down on me like gentle showers of flower petals. As I walked home, I could feel the warmth of the spring sun on my face, the bees were humming in the trees, birds were chirping with twitterpated glee. What a glorious day.

I don’t think where we sing our songs of gratitude is important. I don’t think the words are important. More than anything, I think what matters is that we look around us at the bountiful miracles of every day and sing a song of thankfulness.

No matter where you are today or what you’re doing, I hope you are feeling appreciative and appreciated. Blessings to you, my friend, on this magnificent day.

What are you grateful for today?

  1. Beautiful reflection, Galen!
I just posted about having a "gratitude attitude" in the devotion entitled "I Just Can't Thank You Enough". If you have a minute, pop on over and give it a read.
Today, I am grateful for so many things, I just can't count. :)
    Blessings!

  3. Sometimes, when I look around at all the hatred and prejudice in this world, it leaves me sad and depressed, but when I make a point, at the end of the day, of thinking about the things in my day that I am thankful for and sometimes even jotting them down in a journal, it really does help to lift my spirit. I am grateful that my children are healthy, for my friends and for my family. They are my soft places to land.

    1. Kim, Me, too. Sometimes my heart just breaks with sadness over all the pain in the world, especially when so much of it is caused by us and could be avoided. Children are a wonderful reminder of our blessings. I look at my grandson every day and think about what a miracle he is. Thanks for commenting.

  5. Beautiful post. Gratitude is the gateway to peace and joy. I know when I started practicing mindfulness my awareness became open to all the little things I never appreciated and used to miss. Things I'm not very grateful for.

Have you ever read the book, One Thousand Blessings? By Ann Voskamp? Not trying to plug my blog but if you haven't read it I did a book review..I think you'd enjoy it! : http://ascendingthehills.blogspot.com/2011/06/one-thousand-gifts-book-review.html

I was thankful for the sunshine today, for children's laughter and cuddling with my two kids while reading stories.

  6. Galen thank you for sharing on gratitude, I was just discussing this with a new friend yesterday and how we can choose to be grateful for ALL events which occur in our lives, even if the events are negative or have negative outcomes. We have the option to view everything in life as a lesson or we can stay in the negative 'poor me' syndrome. We discussed how an attitude of gratitude goes a long ways and enhances life itself.

For me words alone can't express my gratitude for life, the air I breathe, and all I am blessed with. I believe my educational journey is one of gratitude; I am pursuing a career in which I can give back, I feel it's the least I can do after being blessed with a second chance in life.

Have a wonderful week, now it's time to buckle down and get a few papers knocked off, no more procrastination if I'm ever going to finish this degree! :-)

  7. You're right Galen, it doesn't matter where we sing our songs of gratitude. What matters most is how we live our lives in showing that we are grateful for being alive.

  8. I'm often overwhelmed by all I have, Galen and it makes me very mindful of the many who don't enjoy such abundance. Knowing that I did nothing to deserve so much keeps me humble. Thank you for reminding me of this old hymn we learnt in school.

Gratitude is to be expressed every minute, as if we look at the world around we can see how blessed we are.
Such a beautiful thought to start the week. Have a beautiful one dear.

    1. Marie, I agree with you that gratefulness originates inside us, not from something external, and it's something we can be aware of every minute. Thanks for your comment and I hope you have a great week, too.

  10. Hi Galen,
Your post stuck me in so many ways, but strangely this line grabbed me: "As I walked home," reminding me of the very early days when we could walk home from church (we live too far away now). There is a wonderful feeling this post captures of walking home from church on a spring day filled with life itself!

    1. Lori, I initially visited my church because it was so close, just a few blocks away. I have to say that convenience lured me more than doctrine or denomination. Once there, I felt so at home with the people, and that's what kept me there. Thanks for your comment.

  11. :-) Appreciation and mindfulness are wonderful things. So is prayer. The feeling fills me with gratitude. Prayer is only a ritual, but it brings peace and a nice calm state of mind. I like the hymn you recited. Today, I am just grateful for life and everything I have - a lovely family, friends, home - everything - the little ones and the big ones :D. This is such a sweet post! Hugs to you!

    1. Vidya, I like the encouragement in the Bible to "pray without ceasing." I think of it is always being present and mindful, like meditating without ceasing. If everything we do is with appreciation and awareness, then everything we do is a prayer and is sacred. Thanks for commenting and hugs back to you.

  19. Goodness, where to begin? I feel gratitude for the God who created me and blesses me every single day. I feel gratitude for the love of a very special woman and two fantastic kids who have grown into amazing young women. I feel gratitude for health, prosperity, and friends both old and new (that would include you, Galen!).

Living without an overwhelming sense of gratitude for just being able to see each day unfold would be simply unnatural to me.

    BTW, I love that hymn.
