Breezes at Dawn

The breezes at dawn have secrets to tell you; don’t go back to sleep. ~Rumi

Dawn’s first faint gleam this morning found me up and dressed with nowhere to go. I thought about going back to bed, about reading, about getting online. Instead, something drew me outside. So I put on my coat and went for a walk.

An occasional car, a jogger or dog walker here and there, a light on in a few houses. We few quietly shared the magic of the hour while most slept. The birds called the light to come. My soul thrilled.

A daffodil invited me to lean over. The fragrance of spring stirred the still chilly air. The eastern sky slowly brightened. Shades of gray blossomed into color. A new day – so pure, so fresh, so full of mystery and promise.

How can a day that begins thus not be blessed?

i thank you God for most this amazing
day: for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes
~e.e. cummings

  1. This is a lovely description of your early start of the day. I could imagine what it was like and wished that I had gotten up early to enjoy the same breezes of dawn. I love the quote and photo that go along with the post. I hope your day is going well! :-)

  2. People think I'm a little crazy because I wake so early every morning, but the break of dawn is my favorite time of day. Much of the world is still sleeping. It's my time to think and move and breathe. No one asks anything of me at this time. It's all mine.

    1. Kim, I'm often awake early, and like you, I enjoy that quiet time at the beginning of the day. But I am rarely out walking that early. I might have to change that! Thanks for commenting.

  3. Galen,

An amazing reminder for the late night birds like me..You have so wonderfully portrayed the beauty of the dawn.

Reading a blog post and commenting on it is good..However I feel the blogger would feel more happy if the reader took some action and benefited out of the post..Do you agree with me?

So,tomorrow morning..I am going to embrace the breeze at dawn with a silent meditation

    1. Rafi, I agree that it's wonderful when a post resonates or inspires a reader so much that the reader wants to follow up in some way. On the other hand, some posts are simply to be savored or enjoyed, and I think that is fine, too. Enjoy your dawn walk tomorrow! Thanks for commenting.

  4. What a lovely way to start your day Galen :) I wish I were as lucky as you, though when I leave for my early morning walks the feeling is somewhat similar. That quiet and peaceful time is total bliss, something I need to get back with now.

Thanks for sharing, and have a great week ahead :)

    1. Harleena, I was lucky this morning. I am often awake early, but I am slow to get moving in the morning. Today's walk might inspire me to get out more often in the early moments of the day. Thanks for your comment.

  5. Oh what a glorious morning you were gifted with, and one I would have certainly joined the outside world as well. Ours, was one that you wanted to shut all the doors while the winds were stirring up a blizzard outside, again, and hopefully the last until spring?!!!!

    1. Karen, A blizzard?! Well, maybe it's comforting to know that somewhere it's almost spring. I lived in NW Montana for a couple of years, so I know about the late spring blizzards and "spring break up." Thanks for commenting.

  6. Hi Galen,

This was a wonderful description of your morning. Reading your words was so calming and soothing. There really is nothing like the peace, quiet and wonder of nature to help us feel good about ourselves and the world we live in.

  7. So beautifully described. I find the early mornings give room for quiet thought. I can't go for a walk with a little boy sleeping inside, but l take my coffe out on the doorstep every morning - nomatter weather, and start my day there. Pam xx

    1. Pam, I remember those days of children sleeping in the house. I loved going to their rooms at night and checking on them before I went to bed. Sounds like you have a relaxing morning routine before he is up and about. Thanks for your comment.

  8. Dear Galen,

Wonderful reflection. Daffodils are one of my favorite flowers -- Love the photo! The harbinger of Spring expected in my neck of the woods today is an impending blizzard -- hah!

I don't usually rise early on purpose but when I do find myself up and at 'em at dawn I always marvel at the wonder of the early morning world. Thank you for reminding me of such beauty. XOXO

  9. Nice. But I keep the early mornings miraculous, because in my life they are so rare. I'm and owl, not a lark.

I like your daffodil, too. We have a few shoots coming up around here, but tonite they were covered by the snow.

    1. Tom, I'm a lazy lark! I wake up early, but I like to stay in bed for awhile, then get up and meditate and do other morning things that do not require me to get out of my pajamas. Thanks for your comment.

  10. Since we got back from Arizona I've noticed I feel better if, on awakening, I just get out of bed and start my day. Otherwise I lie there and my mind revs up on stuff. Not so good.

  11. What a beautiful start to a brand new day! I usually start my mornings with meditation at home. Reading your descriptions has made me think about venturing into the park in the early mornings too. It will be nice to experience the magic that dawn brings.

    1. Evelyn, Like you, I usually start with some stretching and prayer/meditation. But on nice mornings, I might try to do a walking meditation and get outside again. Thanks for commenting.

  12. Sometimes, we just take the majestic beauty around us for granted. Walking that morning sounds like a spiritual experience. We do have plenty of those everyday but are usually too busy with our lives etc to stop and smell the carnations:) Or take in the beautiful views around us.

  16. Ah, how lovely. I am not a morning person and will never be one, so I'm happy to live vicariously through you in this respect. And I do love the daffy-down-dillys. :)

Your e.e. cummings poem reminded me of one I wrote several years ago, although it's not nearly as good:

    Autumn's Lament

Don't imagine you know what I've lost-
all my children withdrawn from my arms
    My best sleep spent remembering
the slow green dream of spring.

  19. Galen,
I have woken up early every morning since we changed the clocks and like you - have gotten out of bed. I envy your early morning walk. I have not been able to go out as it has been snowy and icy. Soon though. I want to see that first daffodil too.
    xoxo,

  22. Beautiful gentle post.I also love to wake up early, take my coffee onto the patio and let the breezes wash over me (with my fleece robe tightly wrapped around me!)

I often bring my astrology work out there with me for an hour or so.It seems my "psychic mind" is "ON" strongly then, before the vibrations and chaotic energy of the mid day interferes!!

Thanks for sharing kind words and spirit!

I love to walk the pup very early before all the traffic and activities get going...I am looking forward to it warming up a bit - the breeze this morning was stiff and very cold.

My first walk of the day I use as a meditation.
